Federal authorities on Thursday charged FedEx with assisting illegal pharmacies by knowingly delivering painkillers and other dangerous drugs to customers without prescriptions.

The indictment was filed in federal court in San Francisco, and the Department of Justiceannounced the charges in Washington, D.C. The indictment alleges that FedEx Corp. conspired with two related online pharmacies for 10 years ending in 2010.

The Memphis, Tennessee-based delivery company is accused of shipping powerful sleeping aid Ambien, anti-anxiety medications Valium and Xanax, and other drugs to customers who had no legitimate medical need and lacked valid prescriptions.

FedEx insists it did nothing wrong.

UPS and USPS are crossing their fingers hoping to see their competitor get spanked.

It's an interesting case. It may be that they prosecuted the illegal pharmacies, and in the course of the investigation, they found out how they were distributing the drugs. If FedEx didn't know the contents they were shipping, that would wash their hands clean. If not, they would be considered like a "mule". Mule being a middle man/woman who gets paid to transport drugs from a high level dealer to lower level dealers in their network.
