I used to scratch my head at why artists like Drake & Kanye did songs with these generic loser rappers who sound like everyone else. I always wondered why they didn't work and try to promote artists that are like them. Strengthen their movement.

Then I realized....the more people in their lane, the less they eat. So you got Kanye benefitting from working with Chief Keef's wack ass because he was hot at the time and it makes him sound like a genius by comparison.

I could be wrong but I've always looked at certain 'great' rappers as cosigning mediocrity for business reasons. They saw what happened to the KRS/Rakim/Kool G generation. They don't want the new cats to outdo them or even come close artistically.
