9 has a better main character than 7. The ending is way better, hell the story is better. The gameplay lacks though. The battle system wasn't all that.9 is better than 8 but it's not better than 7.

Final Fantasy 7 doesn't have an ending. The main conflict is resolved at the end of the final battle and the game just stops. If it wasn't for Advent Children no closure at all would be given to the game.I strongly disagree. Battle system and overall gameplay was even, although 7 had better extra/side content. 7 had a somewhat inconclusive ending, so you have an argument that 9 was better since it ended in a way you would expect. However, the story definitely wasn't better than 7. FF7 for it's time (and even to this day) was WAY ahead of the curve with a deep and though provoking story with purpose. It's only rivaled by Tatics and Xenogears in that category.
VIII's story was trash once you understood what was going on, and IX followed the throwback formula set by Final Fantasy's that came before it (6 and under). It went back to the roots of being a carefree adventure which set the precedent before the moody dark turn of 7 and 8, so it was definitely a welcome change and upgrade from 8, but better than 7 it was not.
The list goes 7, 10, and tie between 6 & 9 for the bronze. 15 looks like it could potentially battle for top 3 though.

I wasn't a fan of the main character of 7 given that he's heavily tied to the game itself and story it put me off to the game. I feel like the atmosphere and characters in 9 are a breath of fresh air and far more enjoyable than the tone of 7.
I prefer 8 and 9 to 7. But I also played them in the order of 8, 7, 9 because I didn't even get a PS1 until 8 came out.
Final Fantasy 8 has arguable the best ending in the series considering Final Fantasy 10-2 exist and undoes 10's ending. To me it's either 9 or 8The ending showed that meteor was stopped and the world didn't end, which was the point. The lifestream was real which meant Aeris didn't really die. So as I mentioned before it was inconclusive in some ways, they didn't spell it out for you and left some ambiguity with the interpretation which is understandably off putting, but I don't think the ending was necessarily bad or that it "didn't have an ending". I was left wanting more with everyone else, but I feel I understood what they were trying to do. The no sequel policy (which they are finally rectifying) that they had in place I think made the ending worse in hindsight. Advent Children was necessary I agree, but that was in the cards from the gate. It's more Spirit's Within's fault if anything.
Cloud was an excellent main character and has since been cloned in many RPG's to follow.
As I already explained. 9 was a throwback to the adventurer Final Fantasy's that preceded 7, so it's only natural that you loved 9 and hated 7 because they are atmospherically on two opposite ends of the spectrum. 9 was lighthearted and happy-go-lucky, a very well made and well executed RP
G-by-the-numbers.
I played 7 first, but that's not why I like it the most. As I mentioned 10 is second place to me and it's late in the cycle.
8 is trash to me, a wannabe 7 with poor execution and a weak story once you hit the half mark, albeit with a more conclusive ending.

All the primary characters are involved in it. It basically has all the closure you could ask for without going too deep into things. It also has the best version of the Final Fantasy theme.
The ending isn't as impactful when you consider the ridiculous story that went along with it. The subplot conclusion is somewhat satisfactory I admit. Final Fantasy 10 had far and away the strongest build up and ending of them all. I choose to ignore 10-2 as a cash cow move and it doesn't diminish how I feel about 10 being the overall second best in the series. With that said, the perfect ending for 10-2 was decent.
One of the funniest games Square ever made. Some of the best character interactions in an RPG. Vivi is a GOAT tier character the way he was made to come to life.
hopefully they put ff8 on mobile tooDisagree. I used to dislike FF8 but after further replays it's a great game - and it's not because of the "story". The party interactions in this are great. They're all "kids" and lost their memory of how they knew each other. It was nostalgia seen through their eyes when they figured it all out. The ending reinforced it all with the "prom" setting/theme going on which is like going back to high school thinking about the antics with ya homies and all the shyt you went through. The closure part after the Sorceress stuff is top notch.
10 is great too. 10-2 was trash of course.
FF8 has the best intro music of all of them imo - the Overture with the black & white still photos of various characters in different settings. Again, playing up the nostalgia/memory themes that made the game so great.
