the ghosts are basically metaphorical representations of the original fans. In actuality they're pretty much just personifications of the concept of 'fate'. They are trying to push/correct the story to go the way it was supposed to in the original FF7. Light touches early in the game. By the end they're a swirling mass of nonsense trying to correct something already too far gone, because Sephiroth been doing fukk-shyt off-screen. People who should have died didn't and by the end of FF7Rem there's no correcting it.
Homie just got way too Kingdom Hearts with his attempting to personify concepts and plot devices as actual characters. The world would be a much different place if the director had taken a single semester less of creative writing. Just
one semester fewer. KH would make sense without a glossary, and there wouldn't have been plot-dementors in FF7
