It's like playing Mario 64 now for the first time. Part of the appreciation of VII is that you were there at the time. Playing vanilla VII decades later you're gonna see it through a different lens.

I'd skip playing that one and wait for the remake.

The game is really dated, I was like 3 when it came out so it was also before my time but I've always been a sucker for 90/early 00s JRPGs so when I got around to finally playing it I still enjoyed it even with it's flaws, most of which weren't really flaws when it first came out

But the game was groundbreaking when it came out, for a lot of people it showed that videogames can truly be a work of art - not necessarily the graphics, they weren't great even for 1997, although the CGI cutscenes looked great for 1997 - but the way the game was presented, the way the story and it's many twists and turns unfolded, and the amazing soundtrack, all while being in 3D blew people's minds.

FF7 almost singlehandedly made the PS1 the most popular console of that era and also made RPGs more mainstream. I'm not kidding, if Nintendo was willing to cave in to Square's demand of using CDs then the N64 would have had FF7 (as originally planned) to go along with Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time and who knows what the fate of the Playstation would have been if all 3 of those games were N64 exclusives

But I'm hoping the remake gives fans of modern games a taste of how the OG felt when it came out. Easier said than done though
