The game originally wasn't even supposed to have Vaan and Penelo and was supposed to be built around Basch but SE brass didn't want an "old" character being the lead.

I figure it has to be some higher up at Square with a marketing background who is calling the decisions on characters. Most of the modern squaresoft characters look lame, like some Disneyfied kpop artists.
