America doesn't use the term colonization but it uses sphere of influence. America has colonized in another way...through economics, military, pop culture and trade. America is the reason for a lot of countries failing or thriving like Japan, South Korea, Panama, and even canada.
Influence is one thing. Colonization to support a system of white supremacy is another.
Did America illegally occupy those nation states?
Is America sending Americans en-masse to settle those nation states?
Did America set up systems to extract resources and labor to only benefit Americans back home?
Is there an American empire? Yes. But our empire is different, as you pointed out, in that it is an empire of influence, as opposed to colonization.
Thats one.
Two - the women in question do not have enough pull or power to cause an outward migration of black Americans to Bali. There is also not a system behind them that would allow them to manipulate and change the economical landscape of where they are residing. Is a Starbucks going to set up shop now because they are living in a treehouse? So this idea of gentrification is bolox. Bali is a tourist economy that is comprised of travelers and ex-pats who are trying to get their “eat, pray, love” on. People are getting outraged at these women for doing exactly what travelers and expats do in a tourist economy.
They trying to sell a travel book. So what?
