I had no clue until I went to games. Jets fans hate gimmicks. Dudes think he's an embarrassment. Jets fans BEEN mad and angry and are tired of getting screwed around by management. Management paying him sort of makes him a target.

Its all oriented around individual support for the team, so again I fail to see what exactly is generating the anger. He's a guy in a hat who leads a cheer --- why are jets getting angry about that? I detect jealousy here.

I will give you that wearing a jersey of a player who has emerged as an extremely unpopular one was bad form. But this whole idea that people hate him because he is a "gimmick" seems to be cover for different reasons.
