hip hop has been using it since it's beginning to substitute the complete lack of musicianship. It's also one of the reasons why hip-hop tours horribly.

No one wants to see a dude huff and puff profanity for 2 hours. I guarantee if the Roots actually made good music they would be on par with Rock acts as far as touring. Playing instruments is a huge part of musicianship that hip-hop has ignored. Also in doing things faster you opened the doors for people who could careless about hip hop politics and the community to come in and use their instrumental talents because "producers" and "geniuses" failed to do so.
