fukking Memphis Bleek went gold during that era, most of the country was getting exposed to the same 15 or so artists on the radio and TV, wasn't no YouTube/DatPiff/SoundCloud/Bandcamp or streaming services to compete with...Idk if you intentionally tried to ignore the era difference or you genuinely just don't pay attention to things
