Warrants issued for six people in North Face 'flash mob' theft
The six men were charged Monday with felony retail theft. Two of the men were taken into custody. The four others are being sought with $50,000 warrants for their arrest.
The six are alleged to have been among 10 people who rushed into the North Face store in the Pleasant Prairie Premium Outlets mall, 11211 120th Ave., on July 1.
The group is alleged to have grabbed armfuls of coats and fled with them to waiting vehicles, getting in and out of the store in 30 seconds.
According to the criminal complaint, the value of the goods stolen was $33,723.
The security video of the theft was circulated by news media and on social media.
That widely shared video led to the six men being identified.
Pleasant Prairie Police Chief David Smetana said his department has received calls about the case from media across the country and from as far away as Japan.
“It kind of shocked people,” Smetana said of the video. “The act itself was surprising. People understand that shoplifting happens, but to see it at this level, it shocked people.”
According to the criminal complaints filed in the case, a Pleasant Prairie Police detective was contacted by a member of the Chicago Police Bureau of Organized Crime on July 7.
That officer told the Pleasant Prairie detective that the bureau had been contacted by someone who recognized several of the men in the video.
Two police officers from the bureau then watched the video and recognized six of the 10 people in the video as members of the Mickey Cobras gang.
Two officers with the bureau identified six of the suspects in a photo lineup, saying they were identifying them with “100 percent certainty,” according to the complaint.
Charged Monday were Terrance M. Henderson, 28, of Chicago; Kristian R. Green, 27, of Chicago; Jerrod C. Brim, 24, of Galesburg, Ill.; Clifford L. Fields, 27, of Chicago; Bernard Stratton, 28, of Chicago; and Ernest T. Hopkins, 30, of Chicago.
A $50,000 warrant was issued for each of the men.
Brim and Stratton were taken into custody in Cook County, Ill., on Monday and will have to be extradited to Kenosha County to make their initial appearance in court.
Henderson, Green, Fields and Hopkins have not yet been taken into custody.
Investigators are continuing to work to identify the four additional suspects.
Smetana said Pleasant Prairie Police are continuing to work with other agencies on the case, including in Cook County.
He said he was grateful for the Chicago Police Department’s work with their investigators.
