Planes have very strict rules regarding their flight routes, due to both safety and political reasons.

For example, flights going over Tibet are banned due to the mountain ranges in the region.

However frequent fliers may not realise that planes also don’t fly over Antarctica either albeit an entirely different reason.

Whilst charter flights may still be able to fly over it, commercial airlines rarely do.​

But Antarctica has always peaked my interest even before YouTube was around - and you are not allowed to fly over all of Antarctica

it's funny to hear people say they've flown around the world when they're not allowed to fly entirely across a continent like you are allowed to others

here is an old discussion from a forum for pilots where somebody asked if they can fly over antarctica and the routes around the poles are extremely regulated, look for yourself

There is a very good reason for this: If a plane were to crash/Emergency land in some places in Antarctica the survivors would stand NO chance of being rescued. Has nothing to do with keeping people from finding 'da troof'.​

The circumference of the earth literally has absolutely no bearing on where ot not it's a 3 dimensional spherical object or not

By this illogic then any circular item(like a coin) is also a sphere because it has a verifiable circumference
