Florida City Pays $600,000 To Ransomware Gang To Have Its Data Back

The city's decision, as reported by CBS News, came after officials came to the conclusion that there was no other way to recover the city's files. Access to Riviera City data has been locked since May 29, this year, when a Riviera Beach police department employee opened an email and unleashed ransomware on the city's network. The ransomware locked files and shut down all the city's services. Operations have been down ever since, with the exception of 911 services, which were able to continue to operate, although limited. The city's website, email server, billing system, and everything else has been down ever since, with all city communications being done in person, over the telephone, or via posters. The city has been having a hard time recovering from the incident ever since.

My first guess would have been Florida if it didn't say in the headline.

Atlanta's infrastructure software was hacked, twice from what I know, within the last year. I don't know the full details, but they even went in and changed the trash pick up schedule of all things.

So stupid. Keep telling ppl, if we don't take a very hard line with these hackers etc we will start really regretting it. Computer crimes are a form of terrorism.
They have your data. You could kill them, but then you don't have access to your data.

It's a mutually assured destruction scenario.

Separate issues.

If you have all of your data in one place that’s a security failure. That should never happen.

My concern is figuring out the best way to deter them from getting into this business. Paying the ransom only ensures this will continue - not to mention that once you’ve paid it’s almost guaranteed that they will withhold some information and come back asking for more money.

Most thieves/robbers are looking to make their money and disappear. They’re generally not looking to risk their lives.

The risk to society is too great to treat these crimes as simply minor inconveniences.

I never said all of their data. And you don't need all of it to be useful.

Saying it's a security failure is kind of duh, because it's a security breach and most of them are results of security failures. Bad patching, spearfishing etc.

It's also not practical to suggest you won't have breaches despite what cissp man says.

Scenarios like these there is no work around that's why patching and education is so important.

Its a great jug as long as the vulnerability isn't patched.

These aren't most Thieves, but I think you're making the same argument Sessions and Trump make regarding drug related crime. If the punishment is death people won't commit the crime - - we know this doesn't work either.

I don't take issue with everything else is you said, but this analogy is BS on multiple levels.

We're not talking about putting people away for crimes committed because of a physical addiction or for acts committed that many people believe should be decriminalized.

We're not even talking about putting people away because of crimes they committed due to the lack of educational/economic opportunity

We're not talking about putting people away due to their being caught up in a criminal justice system which most people concede is unequal and disproportionately punishes poor/black folks

Most of the time these are very sophisticated criminals, who are doing this for to extort money and possibly at the behest of our enemies.
