They are just just private schools that get public funding. The main difference is that since parents can have a choice and are not restricted to district schools, the schools compete to get the best students. This creates competition and in theory improves education. This also creates competition for kids to get into these schools.

Private school with public funding. They don't have to follow curriculum, have entrance exams, don't have teachers unions, and can toss kids in the bushes at any given time. They've been pushed as these great hopes of the future of education, despite there being little difference in results between them and public school. Often they're framed as saviors of poor black high achievers from the hell that they illustrate public majority black schools as. However what they've mainly succeeded in doing is defunding and closing down many public schools. Which means the vast majority of students left in the public school system are left in larger classrooms with more overworked teachers and worse educational tools all around

I read the Tampa Bay Times article and the problem is not segregation. There is no discipline in the schools. Children are out of control and talking back to teachers. KIds are repeatedly getting beaten up and simply lose all hope and stop trying.

Teachers get zero support. Some kids have up to a dozen teachers in one year. Three teachers just walked off with no notice. The principals, along with the school board, are at fault.
