There is weeping today over the modification of running back play today, but another rule change we're not talking about, and I don't mean the tuck rule. It's the banning of another scenario that often leads to too mass crash incidents. They've already placed limits on the amount of guys on either side of the kicker during onside kicks, today it's

NFL owners pass rules changes on peel-back blocks, overloaded kick formations - The Globe and Mail

Also banned is overloading a formation while attempting to block a field goal or extra point. Defensive teams can now have only six or less players on each side of the snapper at the line of scrimmage. Players not on the line can’t push teammates on the line into blockers, either.

The alignment violation is a 5-yard penalty. The pushing penalty is 15 yards for unnecessary roughness.

so in just the last few years we have:

that's kickoff wedges banned
onside kicks modified
fg blocks modified

the push to a more open field game continues ...

:shaq2: Eliminated the tuck rule to implement an even dumber rule, Crown-of helmet rule. How RB's suppose to run on the edge?

Recent rules like helmet crown rule implemented...

and now,
No running backs selected in the 1st round of the draft since 1963.

Are they that bad or is the position just not nearly as important anymore? :hula:

Even though a lot of the rules are irritating I don't think change = dying. This was just a weird draft, only one QB taken, only 2 WR, no RBs and half the players taken being linemen. Also has to do with not needing to spend a #1 on a RB to get production, dudes like Arian Foster and Morris coming out of nowhere putting up #s .

Rule changes suck but the leagues always been like this. If teams keep focusing entirely on stopping the pass eventually it'll make more sense to start attacking with the run more.

It seems to me that each year, the short passing game is becoming a better and better alternative to the running game, and we now finally have our first rule to promote it in the name of player safety.

Last night, Goodell was on before the draft started on ESPN talking about a bunch of things, concussions included. Point was made that concussions went down with the move off the kickoff to the 35. When they start getting more positive results like this, I'd be expecting more rules to follow in parts of the game where concentrated crashes occur.
