If there are tighter gun controls, which make it harder to get hold of a gun, then that would apply to everyone. The person who wishes to defend their home would find it more difficult to get a gun, and the person who would be likely to do illegal things would find it more difficult to get a gun. If there are less people doing illegal things with access to guns, then the need for 'responsible' citizens to own guns to defend themselves is reduced.
The difficulty with that is that America has had centuries of legal gun ownership. All number, and manner of people have easy access to them. An almost catch 21 situation that will take some brave, and forcible policy from the government to change and many years for the changes to be effective and the results to be significant, imo.
There is crime and murder the world over, but you can't argue with the fact that in countries where there isn't widespread gun ownership there is, comparatively, very few gun-related murders and/or crimes.
At the end of the day gun's are too deep rooted in American life for there to be overnight change so basically it's all personal preference. People still gonna have their guns (whatever type they may be), shyt ain't changing any time soon
