When draft time comes around, this word is never used to describe players like Dejaun Blair, Patrick Patterson or somebody like Bargini

You only here it for players like Gerald Green, Terance Williams, Derrick Williams etc

So you If you are not super athletic you don't have a large upside?

what kinda question is this? Tim Duncan never was thought of having lots of athleticism, yet he was a consensus #1 pick when he was drafted.

Not really the point I'm trying to make

What I'm saying is when there was a debate between Howard and Okafur

People were saying take Dwight #1 because he had more upside

But at that time he was just more athletic then Okafur

Wall vs Turner

Same thing

Timmy wasn't drafted for his "upside" really though...he was considered a polished near complete nba ready package on draft day...

To the point of the thread, it's used mainly for unpolished young players that have the physical tools but without a complete skill set...the obvious implication being that if they develop skills, matched with the athleticism there's a lot of potential that's not currently tangible

For big men, that mindset seems to have changed lately where upside doesn't matter as much because GM's are afraid of losing their jobs -

Thomas Robinson went before Drummond, even though Drummond's upside puts him worlds a head of Robinson.

Derrick Williams went before Kanter, even though Kanter has more upside.

In regards to Dwight and Okafor, age is where the upside came from, they were roughly the same size, but Dwight was much younger and he was a more fluid athlete than Okafor who was stiff and robotic which says a lot since Dwight is basically an android with his movements.

I think work ethic/motor would be a big factor in "upside" along with athleticism.

I think it varies from position to position now, upside for 2 guards seems to center around athleticism and their handle

"can they beat guys off the dribble at the pro level"

Seems to be a staple of what they say, and every 6"3-6"5 guard is compared to Wade if they have even the slightest hint of a handle. It doesn't matter if they can shoot or not coming out of College, cause they can just put time in and get a shot....or so I'm told.

Big men upside all seems to be around height+wingspan, combined with athleticism.

Speaking of which... am I a fool to believe Nerlens could return next year and STILL go #1 ahead of Wiggins?

Wiggins would have gone first this year if he came out as a senior, dude is an absolute lock for 1.

He's got everything that NBA scouts drool over.
I was just thinking about the NBA's lack of big men and Nerlen's possible improvement (though its hard to improve while you're injured :heh:)

I hope we get wiggins :sadbron: fukk fsu

Even with the lack of big men, Noel is viewed as a defensive big with not much offensive potential, while Wiggins is supposed to be the best prospect since Bron.

What about Randle, he's not Kentucky bound?

Potential to me is no skill and all athleticism, but with the basketball IQ, coachability, and work ethic to develop that missing skill...

It could also just be that, that player is a physical specimen and could be a beast if coached up properly...

Both of those things go in my head when I think of a players potential...

Do you know how hard it is to hit a 15 footer consistently if you've never done it at all your whole fukking life?

So now they disappointed :leostare:

think we're more likely to get wiggins than randle, people say Texas for him but I think it's Kansas or Kentucky
