Black musicians are generally confined to popular music and we know of the musical
giants in those popular musical genres like Hip Hop, R&B, Funk, Soul,Rock,Pop and Jazz but
the composer I'm about to mention was essentially on the cutting edge of composing music.
Instead of partaking in a more digestible style of music for the general public he composed
avante garde "Classical" or "Art" music.
Though because of who he was, he found his opportunities were slashed.
He was lambasted and shunned for being Homosexual.
He found himself falling into depression from a lack of job opportunities.
And finally he was hooked on drugs, and died alone, relatively unknown.
His name was "Julius Eastman".
Unfortunately like other Black Genius's he was/is largely forgotten or at least he was until someone sought to preserve his legacy and his music. Now I realize that the booth is generally a place for Hip Hop music and even then replies are reserved for the few who sit at the top but I figure, this is one month where I'll give it a shot and make a few threads dedicated to Black brilliance that falls outside of Hip Hop and R&B.
My favorite piece by him is "Evil ******", a rapturous whirlwind of notes.
And because it's written for four pianos it's nothing short of insane
It's like a pure wall of sound that takes you somewhere else
If you're a fan of pyschedelic soul or funk music like Sly & the family stone, Funkadelic
or the blues and R&B genius that is Jimi Hendrix then you might just be willing to give this a chance :
The second is "Crazy ******", another stirring, performance that highlights his composing skill
and virtuosity on the piano.
And "Gay Guerilla".
"Gay Guerilla" is much easier listening to the prior two compositions.
And finally here is the "Unjust Malaise" Album in it's entirety if you'd like to listen
to is music for a few hours :
If you'd want to know more about him here's some links.
