Good points all around. Good thread.

Bottomline...people can't get by doing the same thing they did for decades. You need to be multitalented, mobile and entrepreneurial until you really set your feet somewhere.

Sadly most won't do this, so they will get left behind.

Exactly people don't realize this won't happen for two reasons.
1. the fact that it's not popular is what drives the demand for the job and high salaries
2. The shyt is actually hard!

as an engineer, it's actually pretty disrespectful when people assume anybody can be one. i watched the brightest high school kids quit or get weeded out when i was in college. most math-based majors fukking suck to study.

At least you have your humanity in tact. Many of these people that scream STEM majors tend to be on the crazy and insensitive side.

Exactly. The STEM majors will go through something like the Lawyer situation where everyone is doing it and getting paid like shyt.

Nah breh you are totally missing the point. Matter of fact you are on the verge of sounding like a classic "smart-dumb" dude that's talks the loudest but everything he's saying is wrong. Why you continue to preach this idea that "technology will make everyone jobless," I don't know.

1. Technology does not create itself.
2. Technology MUST be maintained.
3. Technology breaks and MUST be fixed.
4. Most people don't know how to use technology, thus the need for helpdesk.
5. Technology creates security issues.
6. Technology is at the forefront of EVERY industry.
7. Technology ultimately creates jobs and opportunities.
8. You won't see a robot taking your order at McDonald's in your lifetime.

STEM majors should be learned like a trade school for an affordable price, not going through expensive tuition colleges. Plus, at some point, technology will exist to fix itself, so numbers wise, it can NEVER replace the millions of unemployed/ underemployed people. Maybe a few thousand, but never that amount.

Using your logic, people shouldn't get into any job market period, because the supply will eventually devalue them. Even though we have a shortage of nurses and doctors, we shouldn't tell people to go into it because the supply will devalue them. EVERY market of employment carries the risk of being saturated. So what are you supposed to tell people?

When the supply actually IS more than the demand, THEN we can tell people to move on to other things. Because think about it, what is the alternative?

Besides that, even when the supply of engineers exceeds the demand, it STILL might make sense to go into engineering because a huge bulk of that supply consists of foreigners. I'm about to transfer to a university in the area and there's a facebook page for the incoming class for each major. In the computer engineering department, literally 90% of the class is indian or asian.

Employers are going to value American employees over Indian ones simply because of the cultural barrier, and no one wants to see their office fill up with a bunch of foreigners. I have this one white friend who applied to be an adjunct professor at a community college. The head of the department gave him the job pretty quick and straight up said a big reason why he was hired was because he was one of the only american applicants for the job.

major in engineering, computer science, or accounting if you wanna make money brehs. At least minor in IT if you wanna get paid. Metallurgical and chemical engineering get crazy paid brehs. If you don't like chemistry then I would recommend computer engineering. MIS is a great field too

Yeah that's what I've been sayin too. I'm finishing up cc this semester and will transfer to a local university in the fall. I'm debating between computer and electrical engineering but I'm leaning towards computer. The only thing stopping me is I don't want to be pigeonholed into computer engineering as a career if I don't like it. From what I understand electrical engineers have a lot more wide range of options career wise.

See, we're feeling the downside of the shyt the baby boomers learned. My mom's generation (HS c/o 1976) was taught by their blue collar parents, "go to college, get a degree, learn about them new fangled computers, you'll make good money and get a job right out of college." That shyt was true for them, and they passed it down to us. But, shyt is totally different now. EVERYBODY is going to college and not everybody is informed about the dangers of student loans, the job situation, and applying their skillset. People think getting a degree from [insert for profit college here] will get them a nice paying job.

I'm a product of a non-STEM major people laugh at, Mass Communication, and I was a bit perplexed when I didn't get a job after I graduated (2012). I wasn't making real bread until April last year, damn near a year after I graduated. I'm not in the field I want to be, but I'm making 3x the amount of money my fellow mass comm grades make out the gate. Sometimes, landing a gig outside your desired field doesn't hurt as a starting point.

In summation, a degree isn't a golden ticket anymore.

:lupe: What field are you in now?

most business fail within 5 years

Also, where are people going to get money to start a business? Its a pipe dream at best.

Only people who needs college to even have a chance at getting hired is minorities. So, the "college crisis" is more of a white people problem.

I do think a lot non-minorities should NOT go to college for careers that don't require specialized training like a STEM major.

You clowns capitalism is not set up for everyone to be equal that is socialism to a certain extent. The people that major in engineering and "harder" disciplines will make more money. It's supply and demand. If you major in art history you wont make any money retards Add that to the fact that most american kids are lazy and stupid. Everyone in the world destroys them in all academics tests. And dont get me started on black kids. they make fun of other blacks that are smart and do well and call them sellouts and wanting ot be white. I experienced that myself. I saw one of the same nikkas that used to talk that shyt to me coming up is now working at Mcdonalds. and no, he wasnt a manager he just worked there. I guess that rap career he was talking about never worked out.:ehh:
