WWE Raw Viewership Suggests Braun Strowman Is Becoming A Major Draw

WWE’s methodical push of Braun Strowman, one that dates back to last July’s brand split, is beginning to pay off as viewers have begun to take to the rising super heavyweight.


Braun Strowman is a rising giant on Monday night Raw.

Gone are all the generic, homogenous online criticisms of Strowman being “green” because he is a giant who has never stepped foot in Ring of Honor. After back-to-back weeks that saw him tip and ambulance and destroy an entire ring, Braun Strowman has arrived and he is for real.

WWE’s Raw viewership, with Strowman in the main event against the Big Show, drew 3.346 million viewers. In a period widely known as the post-WrestleMania lull, this fell in line with 2017 averages. Not only did this week’s number represent the smallest decline of viewership for a mid-April Raw since 2013—when viewers actually increased for Undertaker’s return—it outdrew last year’s Raw in the same time period, reversing an annual trend.

With a more artsy roster, filled with WWE Superstars who have more of an appeal to the loud-but-less-relevant hardcore fans, it was SmackDown Live which saw a tremendous drop this past week with 2.54 million viewers. This represented a whopping 18 percent decline as Raw, and its Monday night Monster Truck Rally, easily dusted SmackDown’s Tuesday night Indy Pop concert by 32 percent.

And while first-to-third-hour viewers declined at a slightly above average clip of 240,00 viewers Monday night, the Strowman surge seems to be holding Raw together on television while exploding on digital media.

Strowman’s ring-breaking stunt against The Big Show has already amassed over 4.6 million viewers. Combined with his memorable ambulance-tipping spot from last week, YouTube videos featuring the Monster Among Men have eclipsed 13 million views in the last two weeks. The potential of Strowman feuding with box office juggernaut Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship, something that was teased on the Raw after WrestleMania, gets more intriguing with every passing week.

Strowman’s push, as an unbeatable strongman who can move vehicles around, mirrors that of Mark Henry’s Hall of Pain run in 2011. Henry’s eventual rise to the WWE World Heavyweight Championship translated to SmackDown’s highest ratings ever on SyFy.

For WWE and Braun Strowman, the formula to ratings success seems to be simple: Construct a monster. Cultivate the monster. Crown the monster.
