Former NAACP president Benjamin Jealous expected to announce run for Maryland governor this week

Former NAACP president Benjamin Jealous, who served as a surrogate for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (Vt.) during his 2016 presidential campaign, is expected to formally declare his candidacy for Maryland governor this week, according to a person with direct knowledge of the plans.

Jealous, who has made a name for himself in recent years as a voice for liberal Democratic groups, has been widely expected to enter the race. But over the weekend, members of Our Revolution, the political nonprofit that grew out of Sanders’s failed presidential campaign, received emails inviting them to an announcement on Wednesday touted as “Ben’s Big Day.”

A spokesman for Jealous declined to comment about the event.

But the person with knowledge of the plans, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak for the campaign, said the announcement is scheduled for Wednesday in Baltimore.

A former journalist and community organizer, Jealous would offer a stark contrast to Gov. Larry Hogan, a moderate Republican with sky-high approval ratings in a blue state, and the other Democrats who have expressed interest in a 2018 bid for governor.

He is expected to be one of the more progressive candidates in what probably will be a crowded field of Democrats.

He is a strong proponent of raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour; ending mass incarceration; making higher education affordable, including providing free tuition to community colleges; and providing affordable, high quality health care to residents and tax credits to growing small businesses.

Jealous, who has never held elected office, would be the second Democrat to officially enter the race. Alec Ross, a technology entrepreneur, announced his candidacy last month. State Sen. Richard S. Madaleno Jr. (Montgomery) said this month that he plans to seek the Democratic nomination, but he has not officially declared.

Other Democrats considering a bid include Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker III, former Maryland attorney general Douglas F. Gansler, Baltimore County Executive Kevin B. Kamenetz and lawyer James L. Shea.

Many say Jealous, who has been talking to voters across the state over the past three months, has brought a new level of energy to the party, which is still reeling from then-Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown’s (D) loss to Hogan in 2014.

Jealous has not only piqued the interest of several state delegates, who have said they would probably endorse him, but he has also won support from progressives across the state and the country.

“I’m not of the party establishment,” Jealous said during a recent interview. “My career has been working in the community with real people, where they live on their own terms to identify and achieve solutions and solve real problems in real time. It is that background as community organizer and president of the NAACP that guides my sense of what’s possible, that fuels this campaign. I know we can pull people together into big, robust and sometimes precarious coalitions to get things done in this democracy we call Maryland.”

Democracy for America, a national progressive group, endorsed Jealous earlier this month, even without a formal declaration of his candidacy.

Charles Chamberlain, the executive director of the organization, said members of the group, which was founded by former Vermont governor and Democratic presidential hopeful Howard Dean, have been “fired up” about a possible Jealous candidacy since February, when word spread that he was seriously considering a run.

The 44-year-old Baltimore resident was an early supporter of Sanders’s 2016 presidential campaign and treasurer of Our Revolution, which aims to continue Sanders’s political movement by backing progressive candidates.

Jealous is a partner at Kapor Capital, a California-based venture capital investment firm that focuses on socially conscious businesses.

Jealous has said he considered, but decided against, running for U.S. Senate in 2015 after former senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D) announced her retirement.

For his gubernatorial run, Jealous is likely to get support from Our Revolution and other national progressive groups.

Jealous previously said he started weighing a gubernatorial run after Sanders ended his presidential campaign, and received even more encouragement after offering a vigorous endorsement of Hillary Clinton at the Democratic National Convention.

The election of President Trump, Jealous said, further inspired him to seek office.

With his background leading one of the nation’s largest and most storied civil rights groups, Jealous may also have an advantage with African American voters who have made up more than a third of Democratic primary electorates.

But he and Baker could also end up splitting the black vote. Maryland has never elected a black governor.

I don't see him or any other Dem candidate beating Hogan

I don't see it either. But...

It's possible... only cause of the number of Dems outnumbering GOP

But Hogan has governed as a Centrist due to the Dem majorities in Annapolis..

But you can definitely hit him hard on undercutting Baltimore City in the state budgets for education and what not

Jealous would be better equipped on that front.

I agree with what your saying, but I don't think it's enough to steal any voters. If you were to take PG, MoCo and Baltimore City out of the equation I think Hogan's high approval ratings would be astronomically higher. But they of course are the most populated parts of the state. I'm pretty happy with the way he's run things, aside from the fact I thought us 2nd supporters would've gotten a little more relief.

I'm not sure how to feel about this.

I know him and his wife personally. They're good people.

But as far as Jealous (former NAACP head) being Maryland governor, I'm just not sure if he can rock the boat enough to cause Hogan any real issues. And, frankly, though he is a Republican, I don't have any real complaints about dude. He's actually been fairly even-handed as far as policies go.

Hogan is not a disaster only because Maryland has quality legislators

I hate this narrative that he's not as bad as we thought. He'd have us all cleaning Trump Casino toilets at National Harbor if it were up to him

I'm curious: Why do are you so certain he'd be a disaster but for the legislators?

He's an old school pro business republican from Anne arundel. What about that says good results? He's adept enough in salesmanship that he's not gonna rock the boat too hard because he's interested in more than one term

Get him the fukk outta here, I don't fall for the nice guy cooperative routine at all. We coulda been in the exact same position or better with Brown, Gansler, anyone from the DNC. Hogan gets no credit for not breaking a state that was already well off

:gucci: because he signs nothing but veto proof Democratic bills or he let's them pass his desk. Muhfukka has the easiest, responsibility free job in America right now...hands down.

Hogan lets drug price-gouging bill, dozens of others become law without signature

Gov. Larry Hogan said Friday he will not block a new law giving the Maryland attorney general's office authority to take generic drug makers to court to challenge allegedly excessive price increases.

The groundbreaking measure was one of dozens the governor allowed to become law without his signature, including one putting strict limits on the ability of public schools to expel or suspend their youngest students.

One day after announcing his veto of a measure requiring employers to allow workers to earn paid sick leave, Hogan also stopped one more bill from becoming law. The so-called "ban the box" measure would have barred colleges from asking in initial application forms whether an aspiring student has a criminal record. Supporters of that bill contend that automatically barring felons from consideration based on that question denies them opportunities to get their lives back on track.

Lawmakers will have the opportunity to override the vetoes when they return to Annapolis — whether next January or in a possible special session before then.

General Assembly in the 90-day session that ended in April.
Hogan sidestepped confrontations with the Assembly's Democratic leadership on many issues by declining to either veto or endorse their actions. In most cases, the bills passed with veto-proof margins in the Senate and the House of Delegates.

Hogan got this in the bag

Guys none of this makes sense to be perfectly honest. Hogan wasn't elected because people liked him. Saying he has a good "approval" rating while being asked to do nothing in the cushiest job in the union is a false wives tale.

@FAH1223 we talked about this during the elections bro. Democrats across the state decided to stay home because they weren't enthused about electing Anthony Brown and they were upset with Obama and the failed Marketplace website: http://www.thecoli.com/threads/midterm-election.264847

None of that is in play this go around. Whoever runs as the dem lead just has to run as an anti trump candidate, cater to the 2:1 dem lead and wallah! Just don't put your foot in the mouth and this should be the easiest win in the country. If MD doesn't come out and boot Larry Hogan there is no hope for this country at.all.

Let's not forget this is how he wants to govern:
Some question Maryland's 533 layoffs given $400 million dollar budget surplus

If anything, the most threatening obstacle to winning the governors seat are current Democrats fukkn up and pandering outside of their base:
Newly elected Baltimore Mayor vetoes 11-3 city council bill to raise minimum wage to $15 by 2022
