They've always done this. We knew it in the 90's just like we know they still do it now.

Watch those questionable rebounds, when they decide what's a "controlled tap" vs who secured the ball. Another good one was steals. They pick and chose when the dude that picks up the ball gets the credit, vs the dude that plucks the pocket.

Points is the most accurate, then I'd say blocks. The rest are conditional

this still happens now

they used to do it alot for Nash when I would watch the Suns

the Lebron "pass" to AD that everyone claimed was intentional
he asks in the clip "is that one gonna count"

they always pad for stars on ticky tack shyt and deflections

ive seen my whole life them call airballs to catch and lob assist sometimes
if you are a roleplayer you aint getting that call though unless you go to the scorers table and argue it
but theyve been doing this since 80s till today ... you find bird on the block and he dribbles and does fakes and shyt
creates his own shot and Boston would give DJ the mad late assist

Nash used to get assist off Amare facing up and creating. I remember a broadcast where they debated how long before it shouldnt count as an actual assist anymore. It just depends on the agenda and the player. Its no different than "superstar calls"
