The vividness in this picture is just...:wow: it just goes to show you...that this history aint too long ago.

My great grand father who I knew growing up would have been 16 yrs old in 1916.

The ex-slaves in this picture would have been born when James Madison was President, just before Frederick Douglass was born, they would of been teenagers during Nat Turner's rebellion, and they would have been in their 40s and 50s during the Civil War just ...:wow:

It's a crime that no one actually sat down and talked about what they thought about all of this during those days

In the Silver Lining
:wow:....See the early Industrial Revolution to seeing airplanes, cars, silent film, and World War I, all while having been enslaved at some point. We need that film or even a fictional account based on that.

I would gladly give something of value to speak with these folks for an hour. The knowledge they probably had was priceless!

How could you possibly be ashamed of this? We're gods in our own right

Lewis Martin, age 100; Martha Elizabeth Banks, age 104; Amy Ware, age 103; Rev. Simon P. Drew, born free. Cosmopolitan Baptist Church, 921 N Street N.W. (Shorpy)

"This is an incredible piece of history: its a photograph of former slaves taken in 1916. They're over 100 years old at the time the photo was taken. At the time of their birth the industrial revolution was in its infant stage."

Below is an article published by the Washington Post on September 25th, 1916, leading up to the convention.

A mass meeting will be held tonight at Cosmopolitan Baptist Church, Tenth and N streets northwest, to appoint committees and make other arrangements for the entertainment of delegates and visitors to the fifty-fourth annual convention of ex-slaves to be held here October 22-30 under the auspices of the White Cross National Colored Old Home Association of the United States and the National Evangelistic Ministers’ Alliance of America. Dr. Simon P. W. Drew, pastor of Cosmopolitan Baptist Church, will preside at the meeting tonight.

A free dinner will be served for the ex-slaves each day during the convention. Former slaves of Gen. Robert E. Lee and “Stonewall” Jackson will be present. All persons desiring to aid in entertaining the old slaves are requested to send contributions or articles of wearing apparel to Mrs. Julia Palmer, 1513 Tenth street northwest.

Not only were the ex-slaves of Lee and Jackson present, but among the invited included the last living ex-slave of George Washington. It’s unclear whether he attended or not as the Washington Post reported on October 16th that “he may be too feeble to attend

I know 50 and 60 year old white people at my workplace who look older than them, seriously. Melanin is a wondrous thing.
