One of the key contributors to the Tennessee Titans' AFC championship-winning 1999 season has been named as the new principal of a middle Tennessee middle school.
Former wide receiver Kevin Dyson has been promoted from interim to permanent principal of Grassland Middle School in Franklin, Williamson County Schools Interim Superintendent Jason Golden announced via the school district's official website.
“He has served the school well during his interim period, and I’ve been especially impressed with the positive relationships he’s built in such a short time,” Golden said. “Teaching and learning matter at Grassland, and we look forward to Dr. Dyson leading this great school.”
Dyson began teaching in 2006, working at both public and private schools.
He began working as an assistant principal in 2013, a role that he's held at Independence High since 2015.
“Grassland Middle School was built with a strong foundation and rich traditions, and I am humbled to receive the opportunity to lead GMS to greater heights,” said Dyson. “There is something special about the Grassland community, and I look forward to working collaboratively with students, parents, teachers and staff for years to come. I have fond memories of my time and experiences at Independence, and I appreciate the valuable lessons I learned from the great teachers and administrators there.”
Dyson earned a Bachelor's in Sociology at the University of Utah. He later earned a Master's in Leadership Administration and another in Teaching Principles 7-12 as well as a Doctorate in Leadership and Practical Practice all from Trevecca Nazarene University.
Dyson was involved in two of the most memorable plays in Titans franchise history.
He scored on the kickoff return touchdown known as the "Music City Miracle" during a 22-16 win over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Wildcard Game in January 2000.
Dyson was the recipient of a lateral from tight end Frank Wychek and ran 75 yards for a game-winning score.
The wide receiver also recorded the final catch during the Titans' 23-16 loss to the then-St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXIV, before being tackled one-yard shy of the end zone several weeks later.
Dyson will begin his new role as principal immediately
