Forza Motorsport 6 introduces new mod system
Heavily inspired by Halo's Skull system
forza-6-ford-gt.jpg

In a recent interview, Turn 10 Studios unveiled a brand new feature for Forza Motorsport 6 – mods.

During a showcase session for the game, creative director Bill Geise showed off the new feature which adds a new level of customisable difficulty to the series.

One example is a modifier which places the player at the back of the starting grid and takes away all rewinds, forcing the player to come from behind and win while making no mistakes. Adding these stipulations to a race will increase the XP and cash reward at the end, offering a bigger reward for the increased challenge.

Geise linked the new feature to the Skull system featured in Halo – players can up the difficulty in that series by turning on a series of modifiers which dramatically affect the gameplay.

Mods will hopefully add a new level of challenge and variety to the series, although Turn 10 were quick to stress that Forza 6 would still be about creating an authentic, realistic racing experience – don’t expect to be strapping rockets onto your Audi R8 anytime soon.

The reveal came during a Forza event at E3 in which Turn 10 also took an in-depth look at the work the team put in to include night and rain racing within the game.

Forza Motorsport 6 will be out on Xbox One on September 15th. There will also be a limited edition console and controller released to commemorate the ten year anniversary of the series.

Turn 10: Forza 6 "is the biggest game we've ever built"

lg.php

Good game though it was, Xbox One launch title Forza 5 was light on content. Something which, according to Turn 10's Dan Greenawalt, won't be an issue for its sequel.
"This is the biggest game we've ever built," he stated in our interview during E3. "450 Forza Vista cars - that means they all can be damaged, customised, they can be driven in cockpit view and doors opened. 26 environments - ten new. A 70 hour career, 24-player multiplayer, 1080p, 60FPS."
While it's a lot of big numbers, Greenawalt ultimately says it's "not [them] that matter", but the player experience. Hence the team tinkering away with the various systems under the hood to make for a better game, which includes the new League mode.
"You're put into a division based on your skill and temperament," he explains. "So that keeps you away from grievers, keeps you with people in your same continent, same time zone, so you've better quality of service. And it also means you're in with people of the same skill level. And that's a big point: if you're going to have 24 players for multiplayer you want it to be fast and fair and fun."
Greenawalt calls it "a rethink" of how to get players in and out of matchmaking, working on population control and matching skills and temperaments on dedicated servers with one goal in mind: "We want people to feel like they're in the perfect race for them."

I was thinking about getting a X1 for this game, but with a grid of only 24 and no full race lengths I'm going to pass.

While at E3 2015 I met with the Forza 6 team for a hands-off demo of the game’s very impressive night and rain environments, which are rendered in 1080p with 60fps, and look absolutely “next-gen.” The team said they’ve been working on the game since the launch of the Xbox One, and it shows, especially with these new environments, which are firsts for the franchise.

The rainy race we saw looked like it was a pre-recorded event from the real world, and not a video game simulation, that’s how lifelike the rain effects look. It’s not just the rain beading off of the cars and their windshields either, it’s how the crappy weather affects racing conditions and the track that also change the way you must approach the race. Every puddle has its own physics, they’re essentially 3D simulations of real puddles and how they can cause hydroplaning to occur when traveling through them at high speeds.

The amount of calculations that take place when a car travels through a puddle is mind boggling, and one of the reasons why the developers felt adding rain was one of the most intense aspects of Forza 6’s design process. It’s insane to think that adding rain would be such a huge undertaking, especially on a modern console like the Xbox One, but after seeing Forza 6’s rain in action, I know fans of the franchise who’ve been wanting this feature will be more than pleased with how the effect turned out. Just be prepared to drive cautiously, because the rain in Forza 6 can take you from first to worst if you don’t navigate a puddle correctly.

The night mode is also new to the Forza franchise in Forza 6, and just like the rain, it was no easy feat to get night time races into the game while maintaining 1080p resolution with 60fps. While the night mode won’t affect the track in terms of conditions, it still completely changes the look of the track thanks to the impressive lighting effects that are being used to recreate stadium lights reflecting off of the track and cars, as well as the darker sections of a track where the car’s own lights can change the way the environment looks. The lighting itself was the most challenging aspect of incorporating the night mode according to the developers, and like the rain mode, it too is very impressive visually.

Fans of the Forza franchise should definitely be excited for Forza 6, which releases on September 15, 2015 for the Xbox One. It will ship with 26 locations, 450 cars, and feature 24 car multiplayer. There will be a new league multiplayer mode, showcases featuring predetermined events, and five volumes of races in the story mode. If you’ve been wanting to see how immaculate this game’s rain and night modes look make sure to pre-order your copy today to see the impressive effects for yourself. Trailers don’t do them justice, so make sure to see it live to realize how amazing these new effects are in Forza 6.

If you really love Forza, you should consider the Forza 6 Xbox One 1TB bundle too!

Forza Motorsport 6 Director Explains How it Can Run at 1080p/60 FPS With Rain, 24 Cars and More
Many were quite surpised by the ability of Turn 10 to make Forza Motorsport 6 run at 1080p, 60 frames per second with weather and 24 cars on track to boot. Yet, they managed.

During a chat with Creative Director Dan Greenawalt at the Xbox shocase held today after Microsoft’s free conference, I asked him how they achieved that flattering result:

Honestly, it is optimization, optimization, optimization. Forza Motorsport 5, as well as Forza Horizon 2 as well as Forza Motorsports 6 are underpinned by our bespoke graphics engine ForzaTech. And that graphics engine is being worked on by two world-class teams: the Turn 10 team and the PlayGround team.

But also, we’re first party, so we work with The Coalition, we work with 343, we’re able to learn how to really optimize for the box.

So yeah, I think it surprised a lot of people that Forza Motorsport 6 was able to come out with 1080p, 60 frames per second, 24 cars on track, with night, with wet, but it drives great.

At the end of the day, that’s what all this technology is for: it’s for the experience. It’s to get people passionate and excited about cars in games. And if it does that, it’s all worth it.

Today I also had a chance to actually try the game, and indeed it feels great. I honestly can’t wait to get my greedy hands on the full version.

Check back soon here on DualShockers for the full interview.

But with the company’s recent dominance in Formula One (F1) – where its “Silver Arrows” are poised to capture a second Constructors’ Championship in a row – it’s clear Mercedes can do performance too.
