A lot of them used their subconscious to view Superman as a White man and disregarded his immigrant background.

It doesn't help that American white men have been playing the role since its introduction on the big screen, dating back to the late 40s, so for a lot of these conservative racist cacs, they've always subconsciously made Superman synonymous with whiteness and Americanism, basically whitewashing the origin and backstory of Superman's true existence.
