'Shadow Of A Doubt' was near nihilistic, in many of it's moments, Gibbs careening towards self destruction, struggling with conflicted introspection. After the near ruinous 2016, 'You Only Live Twice' finds him leveling out, though still sifting through the outer and inner conflicts that make his music so compelling.
The production is more experimental then 'Shadow Of A Doubt', a sort of bridge between the Madlib sound, and the harder edged trap sound, he perfected on ESGN and his last album. Personal tracks, to his past, present and future move some of the albums best moments, including "Dear Maria", with a perfect hook and flow, very experimental beat, "Homesick", where Gibbs recalls his ordeal in Europe last year, and the role, he, and his inner circle played in it.
The haunting defiant tone of 'Crushed Glass', with a brooding Mobb Deep sample, and sung hook, and the laid back 'Alexys', probably the closest to 'Pinata''s best moments, "I first tasted cocaine in the 10th grade", showcases Gibbs at his reflective best. 'Amnesia' is dope boy anthem music, you can feel the fishcale, and the sound of 20's rapidy counted, with residue stained fingertips. It's a near perfect collection of songs, a little short of a real album, but a perfect return.
