That day is coming. Some cities in America offer free wifi for the entire city :wow: (mostly in cali)
Well one company is going hard to recreate that for the entire world? (US at least)
Get the FreedomPop Free High Speed WiFi & Mobile Hotspot for $39.99
ku-xlarge.jpg

As the world's smallest 4G mobile WiFi hotspot, the FreedomPop Photon fits in the palm of your hand and simultaneously provides up to 8 of your devices with 12mbps download speeds. Kotaku readers can grab a feature-rich starter package that includes the Photon and 2GB of data today for a low $39.99.

Heck Yes! The First Free Wireless Plan Is Finally Here

FreedomPop, the company that makes data plans available to just about everyone, has been a favorite of ours for quite some time. They offered the first free wireless plan and offer a really cool home-based hub with 4G speeds and data too. FreedomPop makes some pretty awesome hotspots and routers with free data, and the Photon does not disappoint.

With 6+ hours of battery life and 2GB of cheap data, you can do your work privately and securely from just about anywhere. But it gets more interesting: subsequent months of 2GB of data cost $18, yet you can drop down to 500MB at will and pay absolutely nothing; the 500MB basic plan is completely free. FreedomPop also has a generous affiliate program that offers 50MB for every friend you refer and for participating in various programs, similar to the way Dropbox allows you to increase your storage permanently at no charge.

The FreedomPop Photon with all the frills offered is normally priced at $99.99. For a limited time, however, it's $39.99 for Kotaku readers, making this a pretty excellent steal. That's right, you're talking about the package below, featuring some pretty substantial savings:

(And for those doing the math, subtract the data cost and you're only paying $22 for the Photon itself. The fact that you can choose to remove the monthly data charge at your discretion makes the barrier to entry here practically nonexistent.) Learn more at FreedomPop and let us know how you like it.
Free 500mb a month if you don't go HAM. Perfect for peoples cars or just on the go.
This is like, one of the best devices ever if it works as advertised. 12mb down too :banderas:

FreedomPop's New Router Hooks Up Your Home With Free, Wireless Broadband

FreedomPop, promiser of free data, is finally launching the first actually free service plan into beta today. It comes with free texts, free minutes, and free data. All you have to do is front $100 for a phone.

Holy Crap, This Crazy New Wireless Plan Is Totally Free
We've been seeing a whole bunch of hungry little alternative service providers trying to cut into the big boys with low, low prices, but how… Read…

We first heard about FreedomPop's free wireless service aspirations earlier this year, and now the details and the beta have finally arrived. The biggest piece of the puzzle we were missing until now was the phone: it's a HTC Evo Design 4G WiMAX running Android 4.0. Meh. But it's only $100 and the service is free! Slightly less meh!

As you can probably tell by the name, these handsets slurp up 4G data by piggybacking on Sprint's WiMAX instead of LTE, but Sprint's WiMAX coverage is actually better than its fledgling LTE network, for now. And, the HTC Evo Design is just the first of a few—hopefully better—phones which will be coming (or will at least be announced) later this year.

As for the plan itself, a few things have changed. Users will get 200 free anytime minutes, 500MB of free 3G/4G data, and 500 free texts (as opposed to unlimited, like originally pitched) every month, for free. Free free free. And if that doesn't do it for you, you can get extra data at the price of $.02/MB as you go, or you can pick up packs of 1GB for $10, 2GB for $20, 4GB for $35, or 5GB for $40. And for voice and text, you can go unlimited for $11 a month.

The world is getting pretty crowded with alternate service providers, most piggybacking on Sprint, and each peddling one superpower or another. Republic Wireless has its Wi-Fi and fantastic phone, and players like Zact and Ting have super granular billing. But free? Free service is a serious thing to bring to the table, and this kind of shake-up can only work out well for consumers.
:ohhh:

You've only got so many options when it comes to home Internet. Don't like the folks who own the Internet-pipes in your neighborhood? Too bad. Well, FreedomPop is aiming to put another option on the table: a $89 4G router with free data built right in.

The FreedomPop Home Burst Hub is the first non-mobile solution from the same company that's been putting out hotspots and iPod cases with free 4G data packed in. The Home Hub Burst wants to replace your router though, can support up to 10 simultaneous connections, and comes with—a paltry but free—1GB of data each month.

Report: FreedomPop's LTE Clip Will Give Wi-Fi-Only Tablets Free Mobile Internet
According to a leak obtained by Forbes, FreedomPop, a company that's looking to provide free, mobile Internet access, is now looking to tablets… Read…

Like any FreedomPop device, you can earn free data by jumping through some social networking hoops, but there's also plans starting as low as $10 a month. The Hub will slurp 4G from the speedy but not-exactly-ubiquitous Clearwire network and, according to Freedom Pop, will deliver speeds trounce DSL and rival traditional cable, at a fraction of the price.

If that sounds up your alley, you can find out more about it on FreedomPop's site, but you'll want to see if Clearwire is even in your area first. FreedomPop is supposed to be getting Sprint at some point, but it hasn't yet. In the meantime, we can't wait to get our hands on one and see if those speeds are up to snuff. This probably isn't going to unseat any entrenched cable kingpins or anything, but it's always nice to have some options.
Now I know, I know. WTF can a nikka do with 1gb of data :stopitslime:
Well, if you took your head out of your ass, maybe you have a mother, grandmother who has internet, pays for internet, but never uses that muthafukka?
All this is perfect for them. I'm hoping on that phone NOW tho. A free phone, what :whew:

After reading that, I'm convinced this IS A GREAT DEAL :blessed:
That shyt you posted read like a 3cept reviewing an xbox. Mad salty all up in it.
First off, everything in the article is exaggerated. I just signed up, you clearly get 3 choices of what plan you want. Was the lettering bigger in the most expensive plan, yes. But all three was next to each other side by side.
Your link makes it seem like they tried to hide it when that clearly isn't the case. They even show a picture of it..
freedompopnotfree.jpg

The other options like I said are side by side, the wording is smaller on the 3rd option which is the free one but not something you would miss :comeon:

The fact they going out there way to make it seem worse than it is tells me overall this was just bad journalism.
They did update the post...
UPDATE: FreedomPop CEO Stephen Stokols wrote in to address a couple of the points above. First, he pointed out that users receive an e-mail alerting them to the $10 automatic top-up after they sign up. FreedomPop began sending those e-mails to new users about 2.5 months ago. Second, starting last month, FreedomPop began waiving the $0.99 “Active Status fee” for new subscribers, and will eventually be doing so for existing users. It seems FreedomPop is working to address criticisms, but the company still has more work to do on being up front about the cost of the hardware and other fees before people sign up, not after they’ve handed over personal details and/or payment info. That issue, combined with the additional services that FreedomPop tries to sneak past new users, is what ultimately leaves a sour taste, not the fees themselves.
So literally everything the article had a problem with (all minor imo) have all been handled already.
And the guy is still salty. Like, who doesn't have hidden fees? Free calls/data/messaging and he wants to shyt on it cuz they charged him $0.99 that he wasn't aware of :what:

Well he said he tried it out in Cincinnati and it worked. So there is nothing left to do but bring her home to you :win:

Good luck with that...im hearing alot of bad stories about that
This would be the place to share that information.
Did you hear about it from actual users you know, or you read it. If so, link please.
I don't give a shyt if its not the best ever, who wouldn't want an extra phone that works, and you do't have to pay for it?

$100? I could get rid of my droid and the plan I'm on, keep my T-mobile $30 joint with unlimited data
Then use this phone for talk. Combined, $30 a month for unlimited everything between the two :blessed:

No i dont know anyone personally that uses it....just after quick internet reserch ive ran across MOSTLY negative reviews on it...

http://www.amazon.com/Freedom-Photo...iewpoints=0&sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending

-The equipment is refurbished (not entirely negative but still)
-They use loopholes to charge your card (and like you said if a "grandma" uses this are they really gona know to dispute all charges...thats probly the plan from the begin)

Just a few points out of many more i observed that turned me off from the idea

Any company is gonna get you if they can. Verizon, Cox, Sprint, XBL auto-renewals, everybody.
And I am not downplaying what you posted, i really do appreciate it. Everyone does.
Its not mandatory that you get got tho, you can be aware of everything, you can opt out of auto-renewal
Basically, no bullshyt. They have it set up like how Microsoft was doing with XBL. It wasn't always front and center how to turn off auto renewal and plenty of ppl over the years got hit up :manny:

This thread, we all now know. Turn off auto renewal, they can't charge you. Problem solved, enjoy that free phone. And if you worried about granny, then you handle the bill. That way, she never gets taken advantage of.
My mother, had internet for the last 5yrs. She just started using it "consistently" for the first time about 3mnths ago.
And her "consistent" consist of vaguely using it for her iPad.

Outside of youtube, and the occasional slot machine game that requires you to connect online?
She don't use it. All of these devices would be good for her.
The phone, you can give those to your kids, nephew/niece, whoever.

I can't believe so many ppl have a problem with free. The most expensive plan (phone) is $11
What types of charges are ppl complaining about :heh:
