My friend and I were supposed to go to Italy in July. She informed me that she wouldn't be able to go and it's too short of a time for me to ask any other friend. The trip is through contiki so I will be with a group but I have my reservations. I have never traveled alone before and going out the country by myself scares me.
What should I do?
Thankfully I only put down the deposit that I can get back if I cancel but the closer it gets, the less likely I will be able to do that.

Do it. You won't be completely alone since you will be in a group so you have people to socialize with during the trip.

Why miss out on a potentially great experience simply because you friend canceled?

No! I would still go. I'm in the same dilemma. I am supposed to go to Brazil in July with someone and they bailed on me because they think they'll get the zika virus lol. I've asked others, but if that falls through I'm still going. I've travelled to many places by myself and I was never bothered. I did make sure I went back to the hotel at night if I was by myself though. I always meet people and sometimes have a better time with my single serving friends than with people I've known much longer. This just makes the trip more adventurous! I say go! Enjoy yourself

Oh and how much? I'll go :lolbron:

I've traveled internationally solo quite a bit.

You should continue on with your plans. It is a group tour so you should be fine unless you deviate from the planned activities. If you do, just reesesrch your destinations. Map routes in advance. Routes from your hotel to day/ night spots just in case you get lost. Have hotel phone numbers, numbers for cabs and police/hospitals. Be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Learn how to ask "do you speak English" in Italian (if you don't speak Italian)

With that said...

An Italy trip is not appealing to me :scust:

Would 100% go. You'll learn more about yourself being in a foreign country alone. I spent some time in Germany by myself and it was for sure therapeutic. I can speak decent German now too. Its a brief, but life changing experience being somewhere besides your home.
