Looking at 2014 so far rap has 4 out of the top 20 selling albums and 9 of the top 50...compare this to rock having 2 of the top 20 and 6 of the top 50, or country having 3 in the top 20 and 9 in the top 50... and it does not seem so bad at all in my opinion :yeshrug:

This theory that no one is buying music is false, definitely not as much but they are buying it. No one is buying hip-hop albums outside of the usual suspects. How can we get our beloved genre back to prosperity?
Frozen? Who is frozen?

Listen to the :trash: rap music today, and wonder why a Disney OST or Adele's 21 goes diamond:pachaha:
for real...has anyone actually listened to the radio recently? shyt is horrible!
I know cats think that anyone older than 28 that complains about the music is :flabbynsick:...but the music of today really is horrible.

and has anyone mentioned that Frozen is the most popular Disney movie of all time...OF ALL TIME!!!

Lot of these dudes dont give anyone a reason to buy their new music. What is "new" about a new Rick Ross CD? Where is the creativity? What about it is worth supporting and funding for the next CD? Regardless of whatever changes have happened with the music business model the bottom line is the music today just isn't that good. When we fix that then we can talk business
Mastermind is a dope fukking album. :childplease:

It's a Disney movie ost.
I was having a discussion about this. A buddy and I was talking pop music. It just a bigger market. Plus the movies has an audience, a warm market.
So, once folks go to the movie, they like the songs in the movie/album promotion and they can go see the movie. Its such a one-time scenario.
But the more creative music album releases are, the more success they can achieve.

I wonder if other genres obsess so much about sales and becoming the premier genre for music.

Nope only this one. You can thank jayz 50 cent and Diddy for that.
shyt disgusts me. Imagine if ALL rappers went in the studio with the mindset I gotta outsell the Frozen soundtrack with this album. Even worse every single label with every single album from every single rapper doing what ever they possibly could to outsell Frozen OST. Pitbull, Flo-Rida, Diddy era in full effect. Freddie Gibbs and Madlib going into the studio trying to appeal to 2 million in record sales :mjlol:

It never will return back to the numbers of the 90's/00's. Don't matter what you do, only a few can hit this range now and ever will. It's simple, rap music isn't supported by its fans, its supported by mainly vultures. We don't value our artists like other genre's do. Rock music is proud of the bands who paved the way while in rap we call them old and need to STFU.

Don't even get me started on the music that's pushed to the masses, most of it if not all of it is fukking trash

Been saying this for years. Word for word. Method Man talked about this like 13 years ago. He said that white fans support the dope shyt out the gate when it comes to rock music. They come up listening to classic rock and don't settle for less but hip hop fans and black fans aren't built that way. it's always what's hot at the moment

How does Frozen selling reflect on Hip Hop? It's the soundtrack to a big movie that has a song on it by a woman who recently gained considerable notoriety because John Travolta mispronounced her name at the Oscars.

In addition, it's not like other genres are out here pushing Frozen numbers either. As far as Hip Hop, didn't Eminem just do 2M. Drake's nearing 1.5M if he hasn't done it already. Outside of them, the only other artists doing numbers like that or better are Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, and Katy Perry.

Why is Frozen selling? Because it appeals to multiple demographics. Women, young girls, gay cacs, old people , etc. It's a smash regardless of race, too.

The only way for rap to sell now is to appeal to women. Dudes are downloading everything, hence why Drake/Kendrick/Cole run things: women fukk with them heavy. That's not going to change.

:whew: now I see why they call you "PIFF"!!!

you speak da truth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

we overestimate HIP HOP's selling power..it is still the "dunce genre" of the music business.........unless it's waterdowned..or diluted with pop sensibilities and politically correct and sensitive to others outside of it's traditional market then it will always sell subpar...

especially since the genre has been shifted to mostly gangsta/trap/coke boy music

ain't no over 35 parent....or person who like melodies and lives in the suburbs is gonna support this shyt..hell my black a$$ who ain't getting any younger really don't desire to listen to the yung thugs..Freddie gibbs and yg's....THESE THE NICCAS I DON'T WANT LIVING IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD............so I damn sure ain't buying they shyt to suppor their lifestyle..

judge mathis said his favorite rapper right now is DRAKE..yall might byatch and moan..but I can relate....you get older your comfortable with feelings of sensitivity...and drake can evoke them musically....one day when yall GET OLDER and trust me it will happen you will understand

You can't be TURNED UP FOREVER ................................................lil n1gga :mjpls:

@JustCKing @Pool_Shark this is an issue because hip-hop is the sole art form that doesn't take high skills to produce or be involved in. Everyone wants to get paid from what they love doing and if the beatmakers and hookwriters don't get paid then it brings down quality even further. That's why sales is an issue. Beatmakers do not do commercials or shows, the "artists" do so they count on those albums sales. Other genres like rock, songwriting is usually in-house so they compose and perform their own music and make money a million ways like performing as a unit. Hip-hop isn't afforded that luxury. Learn the business model of the industry. I, personally, do not bother with composing hip-hop music because of this current trap era.
