Coroner: Fat clots killed mom who traveled to Florida for Brazilian butt-lift

HIALEAH, Fla. (AP) – An autopsy has found that fat clots clogged the arteries of a 29-year-old mother of two who died following cosmetic surgery at a South Florida clinic.

The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner released details about the death of the West Virginia woman who had surgery at a Hialeah clinic.

The fat clots caused Heather Meadows’ organs to fail May 12, according to Miami-Dade Medical Examiner Director of Operations Darren Caparara.

Meadows underwent a procedure known as a Brazilian butt-lift at Encore Plastic Surgery. She was rushed to an emergency room, where she died.

The Miami Herald reports the medical examiner’s report listed complications from lipid transfer as a secondary cause of death, indicating that the fat particles that killed Meadows likely entered her bloodstream through a vein during a fat transfer procedure. During a fat transfer, doctors perform liposuction of the torso, then inject the fat into the buttocks area.

NBC 6 South Florida reported that a heart defect contributed to her death. Meadows’ death was listed as accidental, according to NBC 6 South Florida.

Meadows’ mother spoke to NBC 6 South Florida by phone. She said she is distraught and is caring for her daughter’s two children. Meadows had traveled to Florida from West Virginia with a friend. Now her family is working to get her body back to West Virginia.
