With all these mecha anime being thrown around I'm surprised no one's mentioned Evangelion, Gurren Lagann and Code Geass

I agree, that should have been it. These new cats are trying to over stretch storylines and make these shows last for years. Every anime aint built for that.

That's where it should have ended.

I honestly think the authors ended the series the way they did is because the magazine Deathnote was being run in was aimed at kids/pre-teens, so having the "bad guy" win wasn't an acceptable ending.
