I've been on that boat for awhile now . . and it's like this . . Dr. Dre was a DJ first, he has incredible skill at the craft of making a record in the studio . . outside of that he essentially replayed music from another era and did a modern version of what an old school DJ/MC might do, playing a record and letting the MC rap over it to move the crowd
I love Dr. Dre - but most of his music is a watered down version of a song sampled. Something that was once classic, now filled with vulgarity.
"Next Episode" is an example that defies this . . as the original didn't really have lyrics so he made a song out of that .
2001 so timeless....that Compton album sounded cool but it really had no footing and was forgotten and lost in the shuffle almost immediately. I know Dre low key regrets releasing that. He faced every fear he had when he slowed up on the Detox talk.
Because Dre's music prior to that STOPPED the whole game...all of his shyt was next level...shyt this thread is about a song on 2001...we are STILL talking about this album from 1999...but Compton was forgotten weeks later. I think he held off on Detox because he thought it would end up like this...and here we are with that exact result for Compton...i'm not saying the album was a complete failure, but it had 0 staying power and thats unheard of for a Dre record. Why would he regret releasing Compton when he scrapped Detox because he felt Detox wasn't good enough? Compton didn't have singles or videos. It goes the way of most of the surprise releases, with the key difference being, there was no follow-up. It was announced, it got released like a week later and that was that. It's not a classic or anything. Without a video or a single, why would people still feel the need to continue to talk about it? Albums literally just pop up now and people pretty much move on to the next new thing.

thats my point. he just dropped some shyt out of nowhere that wasnt memorable and he didnt even try to make it stand out or have a run. its just odd. he didnt need to release anything. That's because 2001 is a classic. Compton isn't. Dre held off on Detox because he didn't think it was good enough. If he cancelled Detox what stopped him from cancelling Compton. Mind you, he worked on Detox for years.
And again, it had 0 staying power because a) it wasn't classic and b) there was literally no build up, single, or video to keep people talking about it.
might have been part of the contract with Universal for NWA movie, he might've gotten paid to throw that together, plus some of the music is in the moviethats my point. he just dropped some shyt out of nowhere that wasnt memorable and he didnt even try to make it stand out or have a run. its just odd. he didnt need to release anything.
Technically...Jay-Z said this, because he wrote that.
I thought jay z wrote "still D.R.E." and em wrote "forgot about Dre" (which certainly sounded like an em verse).
yeah you have it rightI thought jay z wrote "still D.R.E." and em wrote "forgot about Dre" (which certainly sounded like an em verse).
