He had a serial killer vibe to him.You know, another thing.. they don't know how to market this character. You don't get a picture of him looking at us like he's the devil, slap some Photoshop filters over it and make it all sinister and obviously evil.
You have the clown aesthetic.. use it to your advantage damn it. The reason Tim Curry induced a fear of clowns in so many people is because at first glance he looks innocent but there's something unsettling about him. A picture like this conveys that feeling:
