Michael Watt, an ex codeine user himself, immediately noticed. "I must have took a sip 5,000 times to make sure, but I was certain." Watt alerted corporate security, who confirmed his suspicions with an internal investigation, and the authorities were notified. The batch never mad it out and Gibson was arrested on site 2 days later.

The visiting room in Atlanta's Fulton County Jail is a small, quaint, intimate room that feels more like the waiting room of a doctors office than a place that serves as a temporary home for some of Atlanta's most notorious criminals. As the guard ushers in Tavares Gibson, a tall, scrawny, but yet intimidating looking man, he slowly sits down and utters three words: "I messed up."

The incident Gibson is referring to is December 3rd, the day Federal agents led him out of Coca-Cola's facilities in College Park, GA in handcuffs. Gibson, a beverage engineer for 7 years, was accused of mixing pharmaceutical grade codeine into batches of Coca-Cola's limited edition soft drink brand Sprite Remix. Understanding that it would be hard to fathom the motivation for such an action, Gibson immediately offers up an explanation. "It was Future's idea."

Future is an award winning rap artist who has done collaborations with pop stars such as Rhianna, Ciara, and Drake. He also grew up with Gibson on Atlanta's east side in a neighborhood nicknamed Little Mexico for it's large Mexican population. "We got it from Texas rappers" says Gibson, referring to the tradition of pouring liquid codeine, preferably from the company Activist, into a a drink of choice to achieve a relaxed, laid back high. One of the more popular drinks to use is Sprite, and a codeine and Sprite mix is sometimes referred to as dirty Sprite.

The term dirty Sprite can be heard all throughout rap music and was even the name of Future's last solo album. (Note: Future eventually shortened the title to DS2) Even frequent collaborator and pop singer Drake has referred to the hip hop drink. There has been controversy over the drink and in some cases its usage has turned lethal for it's participants, most notably the Texas rapper Pimp C in 2007. Texas native and "Rodeo" rapper Asap Rocky shared his thoughts on the drink last fall when he warned fans that the drink was dangerous, even though rappers glorified it.

Gibson said that Future got the idea to spike the Sprite Remix soft drink because remix was a term they used to describe the act of mixing codeine with Sprite. He thought it would be cool to remix a Sprite Remix, "like a double remix, know what I'm saying?" While Gibson places blame on Future for the birth if the idea, he does seem to excuse him by saying that he was stressed over the love affair between his child's mother Ciara, and Seattle Seahawks star quarterback Russel Wilson. "His mind was all over the place" said Gibson of Future's head space.

With 2, gallon jugs of liquid codeine, disguised as water with the help of clear food coloring, Gibson spiked a batch of Sprite Remix on December the 1st. It would have gone undetected if not for one of the taste testers on the quality assurance team.

Now, facing a lengthy jail sentence, Gibson is willing to talk. "This whole syrup thing is poisoning the youth, and I think Future has a large part to play in that. He needs to be held accountable." Gibson is currently cooperating with the government in an exchange for a reduced sentence. He also insist that Future has "green lit" him and that a shadowy Atlanta figure named Big Bank Black is trying to have him killed in prison. The irony of the situation is that Gibson tells me "They got this shyt in here. nikkas in here pouring up 4's in Tang from the commissary." Gibson is scheduled for arraignment January 26th.
