It's reactionary to Sony allowing Low Level coding i.e. to the metal, that's all it is. Competition is a good thing, they heard all the devs chattering about coding to the metal on the PS4 is a great thing to have and MS said oh me too.

Microsoft doesn't normally allow you to code to the metal. I'm guessing this is a change in philosophy in that this console won't likely be backwards compatible either. Games would be coded to the Direct X API. Good news to see this.
WTF are either of you talking about ?
BOTH machines allow you to "code to the metal", they (360 & ps3) wouldn't have been able to
do half the shyt they're currently doing without developers being able to "code to the metal".

My man in Feb reveal the Architech of the PS4 noted that the PS4 will allow you to code to metal, it was a big reveal. Just yesterday with the up clock and driver optimization MS are now allowing Devs to code to the metal, unprecedented on a consoles.

"Coding to the metal" isn't a big reveal at all.
That is common place in the console world, it's literally done every generation.
LMFAO !
That shyt isn't even remotely close to "unprecedented".
How do you think they were able to implement things that
weren't native to the Direct X (9) api on the xbox 360 ?
matter of a fact do you even know WHAT Direct X is ?
Or WHAT it does :?
I'm seriously :dead: reading this comment.

By "coding to the metal" they're directly accessing the machine
without worrying about a graphics API getting in their way, this is
why the 360 was/is able to do things like tessellation later in this generation.

OK You Win.
:ohhh:
I could've explained that without coming
off like I'm looking for an argument.

It's common practice here to talk about what you know nothing about. Most of these dudes couldn't tell a bit apart from a byte but want to talk about coding to metal, cpu & ram architects, tflops, clock frequencies, yields, etc :dead:

If ps4 isn't noticeably more powerful than the Xbox one why is Microsoft beefing up their GPU?

Using your logic, this bump in GPU should do pretty much nothing for them.

You think they got their ps4 Dev Kit and was like we gotta step it up.

Both machines do, Microsoft always designed their APIs so that you couldn't. Even in the case of the XB1, the hypervisor is there so they aren't exactly at 'the metal' still, but closer than before.

You're mostly right. But just the fact that both machines will have RAM inaccessible by devs and reserved for the OS means that its not as true "to the metal" in its strictest definition.

Just to clarify. "To the metal" means unimpeded access to all hardware with no layers in between managing what you can and can't do.

When you take RAM and reserve it for the OS, giving devs free reign over everying else is no longer "to the metal"

The term is quickly becoming a marketing gimmick. You're going to hear every idiot repeating it now.
