Also, Matt Hazard is a lot more fun gameplay-wise than people let on.
As for overrated games, let's take it back to the Wizards and Warriors trilogy for the NES. shyt was straight awkward

People rag on this series but that don't stop me from destroying hordes of soldiers with Xiahou Dun... still haven't got 8 yet but I'm playing the hell out of 7.
Advent Rising - All of the negative reviews were valid cause that shyt was glitchy as hell with a fukked up ending, but if you could get past that the game was fun as hell. Once you had your complete arsenal of powers and didn't have to use guns anymore you were unstoppable and could really wreck shyt. And the powers and the way you could toggle between them was pretty nice. Even the at style that a lot of people thought was weird was pretty ill to me. Reminded me of Aeon Flux. I was even initially drawn to Mass Effect because I thought reminded me of Advent Rising.

my tastes dont deviate too far from reviewers, and when they do, it is usually because i think they are overrating a game (bioshock infinite being a glaring example of ridiculous overrating)
i have to dig deep for an example for this thread, and it is the downloadable game 'star soldier r' for "wiiware". i just think that shmups in general are not well understood by the mainstream journalists, so they give them scores that are at least 1 point lower than they should be. in the case of star soldier r, if the reviewer doesnt understand what a caravan mode is, they will think this game is somehow not a good value for the money. old school hudson soft games had story modes and caravan modes that were short missions for scoring. star solider r is purely a game about getting a high score in 2 or 5 minute missions. metacritic has it at 64, i think 75-80 is fair.

Modnation Racers for Vita. I loved it and thought it was nearly perfect for a kart racer. Only thing missing from the game is online play.
Dead Space 2 is fukking trash. They ruined everything that made the first a horror classic and made it a run of the mill shooter. Enter room, shoot waves of enemies, rinse, repeat.

Well, I just did and it's a great game, but again, I can see the criticism it got. The scripted events (the water slide, the jet ski chase, the car chases, etc.) are straight up terrible. The whole team dynamic thing is interesting but far too limited since the game gives you no reason whatsoever to ever disagree with someone since your answer only affects the person you're talking to. Also, if they're gonna give you down points for shooting team members, maybe they shouldn't have programmed the AI to have them run in front of you all the damn time. It's crazy how your team's AI can be so crappy at times yet enemy AI is on some other shyt with robots trying to outflank you, switching cover positions, etc. But your teammates do catch a lot of bodies themselves so unlike many other games they're actually useful in your war to shoot off as many limbs as possible.
