I'm biased because I was huge Payton/Kemp Sonics Stan back in the day, so I'm going with Payton.

I gotta go with kidd, his career lasted longer. He took terrible teams to the finals, I don't think Payton coulda taken the Nets to the finals. But a prime Kidd with those sonics mighta been able to give the Bulls more competion.

Kidd woulda gotten crushed trying to guard MJ. Payton was able to make MJ earn his keeps that series

looking back, how the f**k did Payton become so useless and terrible in the 2004 playoffs with the Lakers again? I kept on remembering in late games they would replace Fisher in late game situations. I'm not sure if it was injures like Malone's cuhz the Lakers were killing it in that 03-04 season, the team started like 18-3 or something like that, but once MAlone got injured the Lakeset was never the same nor as dominate.

It was because Phil was so stuck on the triangle even though the personnel wasn't really in place for it with the 04 Lakers. Fisher fit the triangle better. Payton was more effective with the ball in his hand and running pick and rolls. Defensively he was getting killed because teams would just put Shaq in the pick and roll leading to jumper after jumper. Remember at one point I think the big 4 all cornered Phil to ask him to go away from the triangle.

As far as the comparison I'd take Payton but it's neck and neck. Folks forget that Payton was an absolute monster affecting all areas of the game. I just felt he had more ways to dominate a game. He could beat you with his scoring or his passing while wrecking havoc on defense. Kidd was better at setting up teammates and nearly just as good defensively. Like I said though it's close.

Why are people bringing up Payton's career's stats? His stats suffered because of his last 3 years in the NBA. They don't tell the whole story.

Y'all are too young to remember when GP used to KILL kidd...that was GP's young guy, but damn he used to embarrass him

GP in his prime was special...what pg is playing DPOY caliber defense while dropping 20 w/ ease?

They are both top 5 PGs to me but damn it's close bc of Kidd's longevity
