Gary Webb, the Iran-Contra and all that: educate me, brehs

I copped "The Dark Alliance" book last year, but didn't even get around to reading it past the 3rd chapter.

I understand it is a very difficult topic to cover in a couple of paragraphs, but I'm at school now and don't have the book here... and to be completely honest, I don't want to rent it from the library (and yes I know )

But what led me into buying the book was Gary Webb's death -- the supposed death, but 2 shots to the face and reading he was followed by unknown cars and people were breaking into his house, it is obviously fishy

I know the book broke down the Iran Contra and all, but I want to know the specifics. What exactly was going on during the so-called drug-fueled "Reagan Era."

The Reagan administration covertly sold missiles to Iran in hopes of the release of 8 American hostages and used some of that revenue to fund the Contras, Various Rebel groups in Nicaragua with the same goal as the US Government at that time: overthrowing the Communist Government of Nicaragua.


The problems were that:

1. There's an arms embargo with Iran

2. The U.S. Government had been prohibited by Congress from funding the Contras.

3. The various rebel groups in Nicaragua also produced & trafficked cocaine for revenue; so while Nancy Reagan is telling the kids "just say no", the Reagan administration was funding the drug traffickers at their source.

it could be true, my REAL understanding of the situation is that the whole thing was a cover for the CIA and the Reagan family to profit off of drugs. Iran deal and the Contra deal were separate affairs, but they were tied together, because if the weapons reup money wasn't "sent" to the Contras, then they would have been wondering where exactly did that money disappear to. at thinking anybody bought coke at WHOLESALE BULK PRICES from the Contras, sold it in the various hoods, and then sent all the PROFIT back to Nicaragua

The whole Dark Alliance series and the blowback from it is probably the main reason I look at the NY Times sideways.

Pan Am 103 was blow back for the US taking down a Iran Air Flight 655.
Iran was supposed to be shipping heroin but instead inserted a time bmb into a suit case.
