If they went to SF to get married, why can't they go back there to get divorced? Why try to force the state to do anything?

So how does it work exactly when a couple is wed in a State that recognizes same sex marriage but live in a state that doesn't? Technically they aren't even legally married in their home state right? So can't they just leave each other?

I have no idea. I think the state does not give them legal status, although maybe common law comes into effect in some states. I am not sure.
