yeah. i see why you defended puff thats real because i am still listening to the interview and the what he did for her was great to be honest.
props.
Yep I'm into early Bad Boy/Hitmen R&B something serious and Chucky Thompson gave the best in-depth interviews. He's literally the closest one to Mary & Faith besides Diddy.
I waswhen he explained how Faith's "Soon As I Get Home" sonically is based on gospel chords. Faith knows every gospel song but doesn't really know old school R&B because she grew up in the church.
Mary is the exact opposite in that she knows every single classic R&B song from her hime. Which makes sense why Mary covered "Natural Woman" and "I'm Going Down" early in her career.
"There was one time when people were comparing her with Mary. The thing that makes them different is that Mary knows the old school, she knows quiet Storm; you can sit with her and she’ll tell you every classic song on the radio. Faith knows nothing about classic, but she knows all the gospel records, so her vocal background is gospel. I did the albums back to back with two different personalities. I was able to separate the two but yet it was coming from the same camp."![]()
Chucky Thompson Talks Creating Faith Evans' Debut "Faith" and the History Behind the Notorious B.I.G.'s "Big Poppa" (Part 2) - YouKnowIGotSoul.com
In part 2 of this interview with Chucky Thompson, we discuss the creation of Faith Evans' debut album "Faith", working with Faith throughout her careeryouknowigotsoul.com
Heck, My Life album might have the most R&B samples and interpolations of any R&B album all-time (Guy, Debarge, Mary Jane Girls, Rolls Royce, Barry White, etc). They did that in a time when NOBODY in R&B was sampling like that.
Don't know about Faith being the better vocalist, singing the right way and all that shyt; I still prefer Mary's singing just off the strength of the buildup to the third hook on "Reminisce":
When she hits that "with the love we shaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaare"...![]()
i never knew shes writes and produces thought she was just pure vocals.
That's where the whole Puff/Mary/Faith beef comes from.
Puff had left Uptown but still executive produced My Life. Faith did co-writing and background vocals on Mary's My Life album. This is back when R&B singers usually started out doing background vocals to get in the game and Faith had a good pen game.
Puff then pushed Faith as his first Bad Boy female artist and started focusing on her instead of Mary. His thinking was basically why make another label rich when I can build my own Bad Boy exclusive version.
Mary felt left out and like Puff was replacing her with Faith. Then add in the fact that Mary J was super close to Lil Kim, who was the mistress of Faith's husband Biggie. Mary was in almost every Kim video wildin out.
That's why it took almost 10 years for Puff & Mary to work together again (the magic never really came back at all sadly)..

People even said "I Can Love You" was diss to Faith. I always felt it was like "Who Shot Ya": it may not have been intended as a diss, but the timing was. Faith had already gotten dissed in the "Get Money" video.

“He had a label, he had a female artist, he had Biggie, but during the time I was really dogging myself. I was a mess on drugs. Any smart man or businessman would have moved away from me. It felt like he was becoming distant, but looking back, I now understand why.” - Mary J Blige after they made up![]()
