Jared Kushner Is Goading Trump Into Prolonging the Shutdown

Convinced that Senate Democrats will eventually crack and that there are votes for a bipartisan agreement, Kushner has urged the president to dig in while also adjusting his position as his popularity suffers in public polls, according to a person close to him and White House officials. A Brooklyn cyclist who was said he was shoved into a parked car by an NYPD detective in 2014 has been awarded a $2.25 million settlement, after a court ruled against the city for repeatedly failing to produce relevant evidence in a timely manner.

“That started a trend of bad faith efforts to turn over discovery that was, in a legal sense, discoverable,” attorney Sameer Chopra, who represented the cyclist during the bench trial, told Gothamist. White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney has pressed agency leaders to provide him with a list of the highest-impact programs that will be jeopardized if the shutdown continues into March and April, people familiar with the directive said.

Mulvaney wants the list no later than Friday, these people said, and it’s the firmest evidence to date that the White House is preparing for a lengthy funding lapse that could have snowballing consequences for the economy and government services.
