The man who spent a significant portion of his career demonizing Barack Obama is surprised that the the same rhetoric has been turned against him? Who could have possibly foreseen this turn of events?
I have a friend that, like me, is his late 30s, that voted for Trump three times, and will likely vote Republican for the foreseeable future. Ironically, he's Puerto Rican. He's a lot of the stereotype of sub-50 male that they say votes that way. Eternally single, not really making the type of money they want or need to make, and looking for someone to tell them that the issue is that the world is broken, not their own inability to adapt to the world. That manosphere shyt we all make fun of on here really is the gateway for a LOT of people to decide to vote Republican, or at worst, just not vote. He parrots all of the generic talking points those folks have whenever political discussions come up, but has absolutely no pushback other than tired whataboutisms when challenged on topics he clearly didn't consider when placing his vote. So, in short, the answer really is that beyond the one or two things that really caught their attention, most of these voters simply didn't think about or consider the others, let alone the potential consequences. For obvious reasons, he's the black sheep of the group, and doesn't kick it with the group as often.
