The 34-year-old Vick completed just 8-of-19 passes for 47 yards in relief of
Geno Smith in the Jets’ 31-0 loss to the Chargers. Smith will start again Sunday for the Jets, who have dropped four in a row and are big underdogs to the Broncos on Sunday.
According to ESPN New York, Vick said he took his scout team reps “for granted” leading up to the San Diego game. He also noted he was sharing some scout team work with 26-year-old Matt Simms with an eye on helping him get ready.
“Maybe I didn’t prepare or I wasn’t prepared, but let me tell you it won’t happen again,” Vick said, according to ESPN New York’s Mike Mazzeo, who noted that Vick “backtracked” a little with reporters later in the conversation. Said Vick later in the conversation, per ESPN New York: “I didn’t say I wasn’t ready because of the [scout team] snaps.” Also, the New York Daily News reported Vick said that he had enough practice snaps to get prepared.
After his struggles in San Diego, Vick said he was changing his approach going forward.
“I learned a lesson last week: always stay ready, always be prepared. That left a bitter taste in my mouth that I wasn’t able to go out and put points on the board or even help this team in any fashion,” Vick said, according to Seth Walder of theNew York Daily News. “So this week has been a different work week from me (and) throughout the rest of the year, it’s going to be totally different for me as far as my preparation.”
