No one is going to be pissed about hitting a homerun but there is truth to this. Baserunners put a lot of stress on the pitcher and the defense. Look up the numbers. With runners on base, just about everyone hits a lot better because guys are having to cover bases and it opens more holes.

:dwillhuh:

Covering bases doesn't open more holes. It just moves where the holes are.

Hitters are marginally better with men on because pitchers are less effective from the stretch...about 40 points of OPS better in 2012. And some of that is due to IBBs.

There may be a little truth to what you said though, as BABIP is about 4-5 point higher with men on over the last few seasons. Part of that increase may be the placement of fielders, but I believe more of that is that pitchers are likely trying harder to avoid walks....though this would require much more research :yeshrug:

Either way, home runs aren't rally killers. At all. There is NOTHING you can do at the plate more productive than hit a home run. This is as dumb as walks "clogging up the bases".

There isn't anything bad about a home run but if you're already in a rally, all you want is another hit or a walk to keep it going. A home run in that situation is great but so is a clean single. A home run essentially cashes out everything you have and then the pitcher can comfortably throw from the windup and throw more chase pitches that would be risky to throw with guys on base.

With two outs and no one on, you need guys that can hit home runs because the chances of creating a run in that situation is minimal. That is why strikeout totals can be over analyzed with power hitters. If Adam Dunn comes up with two outs and no one on, I'd want him to go up hacking. For that reason, I think teams would be foolish to think they don't need power guys.
