Not even a Star Wars fan but Anakin/Vader may be the GOAT tragic hero in the history of cinema.

That was supposed to happen, but Lucas was told that it was too dark. It was supposed to end with Luke putting Vader's helmet on after he killed him and Luke becoming the next Dark Lord. Then he would be killed by Leia in the next trilogy.

I could just never get into it. 
I still find the point of the story to be transcendent. Don't have to be a fan to appreciate the writing.

shyt .. the cast (besides luke) didnt know vader was lukes father until the screening so its possible to shot the movie and fill in fine detail later
they told mark right before the shot to ignore what the actor is saying .. he's gonna be your father (that so he can give a proper reaction)
