The average able-bodied person can tread water for hours. Treading water/staying afloat in calm waters is the bear minimum for determining if someone can "swim". Its a standard swimming toddlers are held to. This dude dead went after a min or two.

Most people can stay afloat in SALT water. Flint River is freshwater and on top of that dude was pretty damn lean.

But who knows, the kid who jumped off the boat in Bahamas went swimming in the wrong direction just like he did as well. Makes you wonder...
