The statement you quoted is at least partially true though, so what's the issue?
Europe is able to fund social welfare safety nets better because they're able to spend less in defense.
NATO exists to literally buy and sell US weapons on a fundamental level. So what are they spending money on?
Strengthening their own defense industries means the money would stay in house instead of buying overpriced USA arms.

This is true, but they have sunken cost for now. They would need to replace so much equipment that for the foreseeable future it could cost them more. But that's something that if you have to start now some sacrifices will have to be made somewhere until they can build their arsenal to the level that it is now with American equipment. And whether or not that's higher taxes or budget cuts, it's a decisions those European countries will have to make.
I'm for a more independent Europe. Even after Trump dies and we get a more Europe friendly government in the future, I would never depend on the US again.
