A Lorain, Ohio Bad Samaritan was charged for filming dying crash victims, shaming them and not helping at deadly accident, reported KTRK July 16. As two bleeding, mangled boys sat trapped in a fiery wreck, Paul Pelton, 41, whipped out his cellphone, opened the back door and leaned into the burning vehicle. He taped the two obviously injured driver Zachary Goodin17, and passenger Cameron Friend also 17. Pelton mocked them and called them "idiots." Friend died in a local hospital of injuries sustained in the accident. Goodin's condition is unknown.
Pelton posted the video on Facebook and tried to sell it to news sources. Pelton says he didn't do it as some kind of gore video. But it was so gory, in fact, that WEWS News Channel 5 would only show clips of Pelton's crash video. Reporters say Pelton actually videotaped Friend's death. Pelton says he only did it as a public service, to teach driver safety. He says he didn't try to make any money on it. But police tell a different story. They say that as officers and neighbors worked to assist, Pelton was just worrying about getting hopefully lucrative footage. The news source say he did in fact contact them and offer the video to them. At no time did Pelton try to help or even to call 911.
But as detectives said, it's not a crime, either to film an accident or stick a camera in a dying kid's face and jeer at him. Officers felt some Pelton deserved some punishment but they couldn't find anything to charge him with, except vehicular trespass. But even that might not stick as Pelton didn't actually get into the car. They also charged him with wrongly entering a police investigation scene. He could be guilty of obstructing rescue efforts.
Pelton's charges amount to a 4th degree misdemeanor. If convicted, he faces a fine of $250 and a maximum of 30 days in jail. Pelton posted bail and went on his way. No court date has been set. But he still has to live with his conscience and the fact that he fiddled with his phone while the car burned and a young man perished.
