South Carolina teen sues DMV over being told to remove makeup
A teenager in South Carolina has filed a federal lawsuit against the state Department of Motor Vehicles, alleging his constitutional rights were violated when he was forced to remove facial makeup for a driver’s license photo.
Chase Culpepper, 16, of Anderson, was born male but does not identify with gender-specific pronouns.
After passing driver’s license tests in June, Culpepper was told he had to remove his makeup before his photograph could be taken.
On Tuesday he sued the DMV, saying having to remove the makeup and not being allowed to wear it for his license photo were violations of his rights.
The teen wears cosmetics and dresses in androgynous and female clothing.
DMV officials have said the employees did nothing wrong, and were merely enforcing department policy forbidding the wearing of disguises.
Culpepper contends that allowing females to wear makeup, but not males, is discriminatory.
